The mission of the Justice Council is to promote and facilitate justice work as a vital and integral element of life at Jefferson Unitarian Church. The Justice Council provides service projects, education, witness, advocacy, and community action to ensure opportunities for members and friends to incorporate the Unitarian Universalist commitment to justice into our lives.

Each year our church gives away tens of thousands of dollars to support partner organizations in the community and wider world that share our passion for care and justice. Once a month, we give away our offering plate to organizations proposed by our members. Find out more about who we have given the offering plate to here. You can submit an application on behalf of an organization you think fits our church by downloading an application here.

If you have an idea for a new justice initiative, please contact Rev. Eric Banner. People with new ideas are asked to fill out this application for initial status and have a conversation with Rev. Banner to explore whether or not the proposal can move forward.

We partner for justice through six teams in our church.
Just Neighboring – The All-Church Project that partners with the Edgewater community, including the Edgewater Collective, and Together Colorado to do community organizing. Our community organizing work is focused on issues of mental health and affordable housing. Our partnership in Edgewater includes reading buddies helping students at Lumberg Elementary achieve grade level proficiency in reading, supporting the senior food bank, and other forms of direct service.

Housing & Poverty Team – Partners with Family Promise, Family Tree, The Action Center, Habitat for Humanity, and others to provide care for those struggling with poverty or homelessness.

Green Task Force – Partners with Citizens Climate Lobby and the Colorado Renewable Energy Society to address environmental sustainability and climate change.

Gun Violence Reduction Team – Partners with Colorado Faith Communities to End Gun Violence to address gun violence in our community.

Food & Nourishment Team – Partners with a range of community groups to help people eat better and live healthy lives.

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) – Partners with both the international UUSC and ADIVIMA to support justice work internationally. Our partnership with ADIVIMA includes the UU Guatemala Scholarship Program, helping keep dozens of youth in school by providing for school fees, uniforms and other costs of attendance.
